Alfie's Antiques in Marylebone celebrates 50th anniversary

Alfies Antique Market celebrated a remarkable milestone on Thursday 9 July 2026, marking 50 years since the iconic Marylebone antiques market first opened its doors in 1976.

The landmark anniversary was celebrated with a lively programme of entertainment and activities throughout the market, bringing together dealers, visitors, collectors and friends of Alfies for an evening that reflected the unique character and history of the venue.

The celebrations featured live music throughout the day, with performances ranging from the warm and expressive sound of the cello to guitar and vocal performances, alongside the energetic sound of a brass band. The musical programme created a vibrant atmosphere throughout the market, turning the four floors of antiques, vintage fashion, art and design into a celebration of both the past and the present.

Visitors were also treated to a spectacular anniversary cake, while the appearance of horses added an unexpected and memorable touch to the festivities.

The evening included a number of special attractions, including appearances by the Pearly Kings and Queens — a particularly fitting feature given that a Pearly King and Queen were also present at Alfies' original opening celebrations in 1976. The anniversary programme also included a music and magic show, drinks and a special late-night opening, allowing visitors to explore the market while enjoying the festivities.

The celebrations also marked the opening of Original Rockers, a new exhibition at the Walk On The Wild Side Gallery on the second floor, featuring screen prints by Jan Pomerans, a DJ set by Smutty Sniff and limited-edition signed prints.

Founded by Bennie Gray, Alfies was named after his father, Alfie Gray, a musician and antiques dealer who played drums in several jazz bands and had previously run his own stall on Church Street. What began in 1976 has since grown into one of London's best-known destinations for antiques and vintage, with nearly 100 specialist dealers spread across four floors of the Art Deco-style building.

Fifty years on, the anniversary celebration brought together the many elements that have helped define Alfies over the decades — antiques, music, performance, art, entertainment and a strong sense of community — creating a fitting celebration of half a century at the heart of London's vintage and antiques scene.
